Mosaic Knitting is a really fun and deceptively simple way to use colourwork to create designs with your knitting. And the nice thing is that you are only ever working with one colour at a time on each row, so there is no fiddly carrying of colours or tangles to contend with! Instead you will be alternating colours in stripes every 2 rows. For best results use 2 high contrast yarns
The patterns are created by slipping the stitches of the colour that you are not using on the working row.
For this tutorial we will be working a Tree design using just a chart. I highly recommend working from Charts with mosaic knitting as they provide a clear visual guide of how the slipped stitches work to form the patterns.
When reading the Chart for this tutorial each row is worked twice.
The swatch and demonstration is worked using Stockinette stitch so for Row 1 you will be knitting across the RS row, and purling back across the WS row.
Each WS row is a repeat of the RS row just worked. You purl any knit stitches and slip any slipped stitches from the previous row.
For my swatch I have started with 8 rows of garter stitch, alternating colours every 2 rows and ending with the lighter colour ready to start the chart. I have also added 5 st border at the beginning and end of each the Row, just to give my swatch a bit of a border.

If you would like to follow this tutorial please download the Chart using the link below.
Using the darker coloured yarn, Cast on 21 sts (or 31 sts if you would like to add a 5 st border at the beginning and end of each row).
If you would like to add a border you can do so as follows:
Rows 1-2: In dark yarn: Knit
Rows 3-4: In light yarn: Knit
Rows 5-8: Repeat Rows 1-4.
To add the border edges, on Row 1 of the Chart, knit the first 5 sts, place marker, work chart, place marker, k5. Continue to knit the first and last 5 sts of each Row.
