I have been busy scheduling a range of knitting classes and workshops for the rest of 2021. So if you want to learn how to read knitting charts, have a go at yarn dyeing or design your own knitting pattern, read on! Here's what's coming up:

READING KNITTING CHARTS
Monday 20th September - 8-9pm

In this workshop we will look at the benefits of learning to read a knitting chart.

We will cover:

  • How knitting charts are used for colourwork and lacework
  • The most commonly used  chart symbols and what they mean
  • How to work repeat sections
  • How you can use a chart to 'read' your knitting
  • How charts can quickly help you spot any errors and avoid potential mistakes
  • How you can use a chart as a reference against the written instructions

At the end of the class you will also receive a copy of the Dappled Days shawl pattern which you can use to put your new chart reading skills into practice!  


KNITTING CABLES
Tuesday 21st September - 8-8.30pm

Cables are a way of making your stitches travel over your knitting by crossing sets of stitches over to create patterns. They are fun and easy to work and will add the wow factor to any knitted project.

In this 30 minute masterclass you will learn:

  • What yarns work best for knitting cables
  • How to knit a cable pattern
  • How to use a cable needle
  • How to read standard Cable abbreviations

This class is suitable for beginner knitters who are comfortable with knit and purl stitches. 


KNITTING DESIGN
Weds 29th September - 8-9pm (6 week course)

Have you ever wanted to design your own knitting patterns but don't know where to start? This 6 week introduction to knitting design will guide you from inspiration to pattern writing.

In this course we will be designing a cowl pattern and working through the steps from inspiration, refining your ideas, swatching, knitting a sample and then writing up a pattern that other knitters can follow.

Zoom calls will take place every Weds at 8pm (UK time) for 6 weeks from 29th September to 3rd November. For the full schedule of what will be covered each week click on the button below.


 

FIXING MISTAKES
Monday 25th October - 8-9pm

When learning to knit it can be very frustrating when stitches are accidentally dropped, or a new one suddenly appears on the needles. In this class we will look at some of the common problems that can occur when learning to knit, how to spot them and how to easily fix them and get you back on track.

In this workshop you will learn:

  • How stockinette stitch works and how to quickly identify any errors
  • How to pick up a dropped stitch
  • How to deal with any unintended extra stitches
  • How to change a purl to a knit stitch without ripping back, even if it occurs a few rows down
  • Ripping back and tinking
  • How to use a lifeline

This class is suitable for beginner knitters.

SHAWL KNITTING
Saturday 30th October - 10-1pm

During this class we will explore 5 different shawl shapes that are commonly used for shawl knitting, and knit mini-samples of these shapes. We'll also talk about how to choose the best yarn and needles for your projects. From casting on, casting off and all the way to blocking your shawl, this class will give you everything you need to tackle your next shawl project with confidence!

The class will be taught using the English Style of knitting and is suitable for knitters who are comfortable with knit and purl stitches. The areas and techniques covered are:

  • How to choose yarns and needles that will work with your shawl pattern
  • Knitting mini shawls:
  1. Bottom Up Triangle Shawl
  2. Crescent Shaped Shawl and the Garter Tab cast on
  3. Semi-Circular Shawl
  4. Asymmetrical Shawl
  5. Top Down Triangle Shawl
  • Lace Bind-Off
  • How to block your shawl for a professional finish
  • Start your own shawl project

At the end of the class you will have 5 shawl patterns that you can start knitting straight away!

YARN DYEING (INCLUDES MATERIALS)
Sunday 7th November - 2-3.30pm

Join Camilla from Knitting Needle Lane and I for an afternoon of yarn dyeing! In this class we cover everything from prepping your yarn, colour inspirations, different methods of yarn dyeing and how to heat set your finished skeins. This class is a lot of fun and everything you need for this workshop will be sent to you ahead of the class.

LACE SHAWL KNITALONG AND CHART READING
Monday 8th November - 8-9pm (5 week course)

Knit a lace shawl in this 5 week Knitalong course.

In this course we will be knitting the Dappled Days shawl together. Worked from the top down and triangular in shape, this generous sized shawl alternates between sections of garter stitch and has 4 lace stripes. Each of the lace sections expands on the previous one so you start of with a simple diamond motif, and then build on your skills for each section.

We will also look at knitting charts and discover why they are a game changer when it comes to lace knitting!

SOCK KNITTING
Weds 10th and Thurs 11th November - 7-9pm 

This workshop is conducted over 2 sessions and we will be exploring the construction of sock knitting by knitting a mini-sock from the top down using double pointed needles. Don't worry if you have never used double pointed needles (dpns) or knitted in the round before as there will be close up demonstrations throughout the class.

At the end of the class you will be given a document with all of the information covered in the class for future reference.

You will also receive a full size adult sock pattern which uses all of the techniques used to knit the mini sock so that you can put your new skills into practice! The adult pattern also comes with links to video tutorials so you can easily refer to these if you need a refresher in the future.

KNITTING BEYOND THE BASICS
Sunday 14th November - 2-5pm 


Are you a fairly new knitter who has mastered knit and purl stitches and not sure where to go next? This class is for you.

In the Next Steps in Knitting class we will work through a knitting pattern together, stopping at each section to discuss what information is being provided and how we can use this to make decisions in our knitting projects.

We explore how different types of yarns and needles can make a real difference to our knitting, and how to choose our yarn and make substitutions. We discuss gauge and why it is important and also learn to decipher knitting abbreviations!

Then we cast on the Diamond Lace purse and work through a range of techniques including: how to make left and right leaning increases, how to make a buttonhole and knitting a simple lace pattern.

The class is kept small (to a maximum of 6 people) so guided tuition and support is on hand throughout the class.

KNITTING WITH BEADS
Thursday 18th November - 7.30-9pm

Find out how to add beads to your knitting and design your own bead pattern to work on a beaded bracelet.

In this workshop we will look at how to add beads to a knitting project. We will look at:

  • How to add beads to your knitting using a crochet hook
  • Different types and of beads and which size will work best for your yarn
  • Hints and tips on where to place beads depending on your pattern
  • How to use a chart to plot your bead pattern
  • Creating your own bead design to use on a beaded bracelet

You will need to be comfortable with knit and purl stitches, basic lace knitting and reading charts for this class.

CHRISTMAS KNITALONG (MATERIALS INCLUDED)
Friday 26th November - 7.30-9.30pm
or
Sunday 28th November - 11-1pm

In this festive knitalong class we will be casting and making a little mini-santa hat. This is a fun and informal knitalong and the class is kept small to allow to make it a cozy space for us to have a knit and natter as we make the hat.

There are 2 sessions available - choose a Friday night (with a glass of mulled wine) or join in for a relaxed Sunday morning knitalong.

The adorable little hat can be used as a tree decoration, festive bottle topper or you could string a few together for some mini-hat bunting!

You will be sent a kit ahead of the class which will include the instructions and enough yarn to make 3 mini hats.

You can choose to knit the hat in the round on double pointed needles, or you can knit it flat on straight needles and seam it at the end. Instructions for both methods are provided in the pattern.

You will just need to bring a pair of 4mm needles (straight or double pointed depending on how you want to knit the hat) some scissors, and a tapestry needle to weave the ends in.

This workshop is suitable for beginners comfortable with knit and purl stitches and k2tog decreases and kfb (knit front back) increases.

CLASS INFORMATION

All classes will be held via Zoom and you will receive a link with login details before the class. Classes are informal, friendly and kept small to allow for focused tuition and time to ask questions as you go along. Please note that times are UK times (BST). If you would like to attend a particular class but the time does not work for you, please drop me an e-mail and let me know as I am happy to schedule extra classes if the demand is there.
